Everything you need to know about mattopen — how it works, what you can do with it and why it's more than just a place to save links.
Getting started
4 questions
mattopen is a platform for curated link collections. You save URLs, mattopen fills in the details — title, image, description, tags — and you organise everything into public or private collections that others can follow.
Think of it less as a place to stash things privately and more as a way to build and share curated collections with a community that helps surface the best ones through ❤️ votes. It's the difference between a filing cabinet and a published magazine.

Yes — no subscription, no upgrade, no fine print. All features are available from the moment you sign up. No credit card required.
Browser bookmarks are a private drawer that gets cluttered fast. mattopen is something you can share, publish and build on together with others.
Every link gets enriched automatically — title, image, description, tags — and you can add your own note or angle. The result is something worth reading, not just a raw URL. When you make a collection public, people can follow it, discover it in the feed and help rank the best links to the top with ❤️ votes.

No. Any public collection can be read by anyone — no account needed. Just share the link and your readers are straight in.
You do need an account to save links, create collections, follow curators or give ❤️ votes that influence the ranking.

Paste a URL into the input at the top of your dashboard. mattopen visits the page in the background and fetches everything automatically: title, image, description and relevant tags — a solid first draft in seconds.
From there it's yours to shape: add a personal note, pick the angle that made you save it or adjust the tags so they match how you think. The best bookmarks are the ones with your voice in them.

Yes. Export your bookmarks from Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari (all support HTML export) and import the file into mattopen. Your browser folders become lists automatically.
You can preview what will be imported and choose exactly what to bring across — so you don't have to start from scratch.

When you save a link, mattopen suggests tags based on the page content. You can accept them, remove the ones that don't fit or add your own.
Tags are how you'll find things again later — and how others discover your content in the feed. A link tagged recipe, japanese and weeknight is a lot easier to rediscover than one with no context at all.

Absolutely — everything mattopen fetches is a starting point, not a final version. You can edit the title, rewrite the description in your own words, swap the cover image (mattopen offers several to choose from) and adjust the tags at any time.
That editorial freedom is the whole point. A link with your own take on it is worth ten times more than a raw URL.

Collections & curation
5 questions
A collection is a named, curated set of links. You give it a title, write a description that explains what it's about and then fill it with links. Each collection has its own page, its own URL and can be shared with a single link.
Collections can be public (visible to everyone in the feed) or private (only you). You can drag items to reorder them — or let the community sort them for you via ❤️ votes.

You decide — per collection and per individual link. Public means anyone can see it, no account needed. Private means only you.
Mixed collections work too: if a collection is public but some individual links inside it are set to private, those links are hidden automatically for anyone else. You stay in full control.

Smart collections are three automatic groups that mattopen maintains for you: All bookmarks, Private and Public. They update themselves instantly whenever you save or change something — nothing to maintain, always accurate.
Every public collection has its own URL — just copy it and share it anywhere. The person receiving it doesn't need a mattopen account to read it.
You can also find the share button on every public collection and link for a one-click copy.

Yes. You can follow individual collections independently of their creator. That means you subscribe to exactly the curation you care about — without everything else that person posts showing up in your feed.
Community & discovery
5 questions
Signed-in users who have a history on mattopen can give individual links within a collection a heart. The more hearts a link receives, the higher it rises in that collection's order.
This means the ranking is shaped by real people who actually engaged with the content — not by an algorithm guessing what you might want to see. The curator always keeps control over the collection itself but the community decides what deserves to be at the top.

Signed-in users with some activity history on the platform. This small barrier keeps the ranking meaningful — it filters out bots and drive-by votes, so the hearts that do appear actually reflect genuine recommendations from real people who've used the platform.
The public feed on the homepage shows everything the community is saving right now. Sort it by Newest, Trending, Best rated or Most viewed depending on what you're in the mood for.
You can also use the search with autocomplete to find lists and links by keyword or browse by tag to go deep on a specific topic.

Follow the curators whose taste you trust. Their latest saves and lists show up in your personalised Following feed — so instead of hunting for good content, it comes to you, filtered through people whose judgement you value.
Every user gets a public profile page at mattopen.com/u/[yourname] showing your public collections, your recent saves and your follower count. It's a clean, readable page anyone can visit — no account needed.

It means mattopen is live and usable, but actively being built. Things might occasionally move, change or behave unexpectedly. When they do, that's not a problem — that's exactly why you're here early.
